Fifty years of the Florida resort, framed in shimmer
Walt Disney World Resort begins an 18-month celebration on October 1, 2021, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Magic Kingdom's opening on the same date in 1971. The campaign carries the title "The World's Most Magical Celebration" and runs through April 1, 2023, spanning all four theme parks, two water parks, the Disney Springs district, and the resort's hotel portfolio.
Disney introduces a coined word, "EARidescent", to describe the visual treatment that defines the celebration. The aesthetic combines iridescent finishes with Champagne gold, applied to costuming, signage, merchandise, and architectural overlays. Cinderella Castle in the Magic Kingdom receives a new ornamental crest, banners, and shimmering decorative treatments, while Tree of Life at Disney's Animal Kingdom, Spaceship Earth at EPCOT, and the Hollywood Tower Hotel at Disney's Hollywood Studios are designated as "Beacons of Magic", each illuminated by a tailored nighttime lighting moment.
A merchandising and culinary framework
The celebration anchors a purposefully extensive product programme. The EARidescent Collection introduces a shimmering range of fashion, accessories, and ear headwear across the resort's retail outlets. A separate sculptural programme, the Disney Fab 50, distributes fifty golden character statues across the four parks, featuring Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale, and a curated selection from the Disney, Pixar, and Marvel character library. More than 150 new food and beverage items, including an EARidescent Croissant Donut at EPCOT and the Magical Beacon Cocktail at select table service venues, extend the design language to the resort's restaurants.
New nighttime spectaculars
Two new nighttime shows debut on the opening day. "Disney Enchantment" replaces "Happily Ever After" at the Magic Kingdom, extending fireworks and projection mapping from Cinderella Castle along Main Street, U.S.A. for the first time. "Harmonious" launches at EPCOT as the largest nighttime spectacular ever produced for a Disney park, combining floating set pieces, water fountains, lasers, and pyrotechnics on World Showcase Lagoon. Both productions sit at the centre of the celebration's broadcast and editorial coverage and provide a recurring visual anchor for the campaign across television specials and social media.
Brand context
The 50th anniversary follows the most significant operational disruption in the resort's history. Walt Disney World closes for fifteen weeks in 2020 owing to the COVID 19 pandemic and reopens with capacity restrictions and reduced entertainment offerings. "The World's Most Magical Celebration" functions as both a heritage moment and a recovery narrative, reasserting the resort's position as the centerpiece of Disney's parks division. The campaign coincides with the launch of the Disney Genie planning service and the introduction of Genie+, the resort's first paid line skip product, signalling a parallel modernisation of the guest experience under the same celebratory banner.
By April 2023, when the celebration concludes, Walt Disney World has hosted Disney's centenary build up programming, integrating "100 Years of Wonder" elements into the closing months and providing a visual bridge to the company's broader anniversary year.
